What is Deformation Survey and Why It is Important

Deformation survey is part of analysis done on land that is to be used for construction of buildings, railway tracks, tunnels, etc. This survey determines the stability of a land that whether the mass changes shape or whether there is change in the measurements of land due to motion.

Deformation may be caused naturally or artificially such as due to earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, etc. The importance of this survey is to understand the risk factor of construction over that land. The technique is very essential for areas that are prone to earthquakes and landslides. As per the risk assessment done in the form of deformation survey, structures may be built accordingly, with necessary arrangements in place.

There are a lot of other surveys that are undertaken before initiating construction. Geotechnical surveys, as they are called, are applied to the site to understand different angles of risk of that land and then appropriate steps are taken to reduce the impact of any likely detrimental event. Significant reduction in insurance premiums is also a key advantage in applying these techniques for construction sites. However, this is not a one-time approach as land may shift on a regular basis at minute levels.
